Losing a house key is always a hassle, but instead of hiding a spare key underneath your welcome mat simply give a spare key to a neighbor. In the event your nearest neighbor lives some distance away and you must leave a key outside, put it in a secure lockbox.
Additionally, do not put labels on your keys. A lost house key with an address on it is essentially an invitation for burglary. Avoid putting your last name on your mailbox as well. It’s quite easy for burglars to find your information online and use it to monitor your movements and identify when your home is empty.
